Things We Were Taught About Food That Aren’t True

One common belief is that sweet breakfasts are unhealthy. In reality, sweetness itself isn’t the issue, it’s the lack of balance. A sweet meal that includes fibre and protein, like oats with fruit and nuts, behaves very differently in the body than sugar-heavy cereals or pastries.

Another misconception is that feeling hungry again means you ate incorrectly. Hunger is normal. Meals that lack protein or fibre, such as plain toast or fruit alone, digest quickly and leave you hungry sooner. Adding foods like nuts, seeds, milk, or yogurt helps meals last longer.

We’re also taught that healthy food must be bland or restrictive. But enjoyable meals, whether it’s a chocolate-flavoured breakfast, a fruit-based bowl, or a warm, comforting meal, are easier to maintain consistently. Eating well isn’t about strict rules; it’s about choosing food that leaves you feeling satisfied and energised.
